Social networking has allowed for people all over the world to connect. Updating a Facebook status or Twittering have become almost second nature to some, making it possible for every move to be tracked by anyone and everyone who goes online. Many people, though, are discovering that this can be a dangerous thing (Potential employers using social networks to check up on job candidates, businesspeople posting not-so-professional information, etc.). On his blog, Peter Shankman recently brought attention to a foot-in-Twitter case in the advertising industry: An agency account exec, ready to land a big deal, posted a remark on Twitter about the city in which he landed. An employee of the prospective client saw the post and took offense. He not only angrily e-mailed the ad exec, but also included the management of his company and the agency in the addressees. Ouch. This is just another case of how truly open the World Wide Web is, and whether you’re writing a blog, shooting off an e-mail, or venting on Twitter, a potential client (or employer, or anyone for that matter) may see it.
