Carving out a future (A lesson from Circuit City employees)

Earlier this week, I  was buying video cables for half-​price at my local (soon-​to-​be-​closed-​forever) Circuit City.  As I secretly celebrated my good fortune for finding high-​quality cables at such a deep discount, I also couldn't help notice the barren walls and disassembled shelves.  That's when I started looking around at the employees and really understood the impact this closing was going to have on folks… Not just the employees and their families, but the agencies, vendors and suppliers who were also being affected.  I took a few minutes and chatted-​up some of the workers…  The sales-​floor personnel, cashier, etc.  Even in the disheveled surroundings that constantly reminded them that "the clock was ticking", they all seemed fairly optimistic about their situations… One was returning to school to finish her degree… Another was starting his own business… I learned that even the manager has received a job offer from a top national competitor. My overall impression was this:  What was initially a tragic occurrence for so many has turned into an opportunity for at least a few of those closest to the front lines.  These day-​to-​day workers have gotten over the initial shock and carved a future for themselves… One that doesn't include Circuit City. Advertising Agencies and Vendors could learn a lesson from these plucky souls.  When one door closes, keep a watchful eye for the next open door… Then run like hell to get your foot in it!  Suppliers can do the same thing by introducing their product lines to the likes of Walmart and Target (Did you know that you can't buy a Center channel speaker for your home theater at either place?  I know… I've been looking all over town for one, for weeks).
