Frozen Yogurt Goes Upscale

There's no better time to introduce new flavors and products in a frozen dessert line than summer. And Bruce Horovitz, writing for USA Today, recently informed readers that we can all expect to see the competition building in the frozen yogurt market this year. Some manufacturers are promoting the functional food angle — think probiotic. Other vendors hope to successfully reach for consumer wallets by enhancing the frozen treat experience in much the same way that Starbucks appeals to emotions of coffee drinkers. Either way, many of these retailers are charging high prices for their sweet treats.

Horovitz points out that up-and-coming retail players in the frozen yogurt market include:

  • Pinkberry
  • Red Mango
  • Yogurtland
  • Tasti D‑Lite

According to Horowitz, annual frozen yogurt sales approach $8.1 billion and sales of all ice cream-related snacks increase by at least 20% in summer months. This summer, look for more traditional and online advertising to support the fast-growing retailers, especially Pinkberry and Red Mango who are expanding their franchise networks. All of this activity will certainly prompt consumers to notice that the frozen yogurt world has changed in a big way. Have any new frozen yogurt retailers opened shop in your market recently?
