Consumers who closed their wallets during the 2008 holiday shopping season may be thinking about opening them this year. About 75% of participants in PC Magazine’s Consumer Electronics Holiday Study say they will up their spending this year on technology products such as computers and TVs. Vendors should begin advertising early because up to a third of these consumers will begin shopping in October.
The top 5 products on consumer lists this year will be:
- Notebook PCs
- Blu-Ray players
- Desktop PCs
Vendors of operating systems may be particularly aggressive about marketing this year. About ¾’s of PC buyers will opt for a Windows-based operating system. Another 11% are confirmed Mac users. That leaves about 13% of potential purchasers who need to be swayed to buy a specific operating system – an important detail that can be addressed by more advertising and effective branding campaigns.[Source: PC Magazine release, August 2009]
