10% of Shoppers Now Buy Some Groceries Online

"Adop­tion of online gro­cery shop­ping is mov­ing at a slow­er pace than oth­er con­sumer cat­e­gories, but it’s grow­ing with about 10% of U.S. con­sumers now reg­u­lar­ly buy­ing gro­ceries, reports The NPD Group, a lead­ing glob­al infor­ma­tion com­pa­ny. Although there are more con­sumers buy­ing their gro­ceries online, they haven’t jumped all in. Near­ly all online gro­cery shop­pers (99%) still shop in brick-and-mortar gro­cery stores."

Does Online Grocery Retailing Have a Future?

Busi­ness­es con­tin­ue to design new ways to change con­sumer habits when it comes to gro­cery shop­ping. There's been no short­age of effort devot­ed to increas­ing online gro­cery sales but this seg­ment only accounts for between 1–2% of the indus­try total. A recent col­umn in Inter­net Retail­er cov­ers the salient aspects of e‑commerce and gro­cery stores and the results of the analy­sis should be encour­ag­ing to ad agen­cies look­ing for new busi­ness oppor­tu­ni­ties.
