NRF: 54% of Retailers to Open Traditional Stores This Year

M‑Commerce to Account for More Than Half of Online Sales by 2018

Sales made through mobile phones and tablets are just begin­ning to have an impact on e‑commerce, how­ev­er, those trans­ac­tions are expect­ed to reach $293 bil­lion by 2018, or approx­i­mate­ly 54% of all online sales. Tablets are expect­ed to dri­ve $219 bil­lion of those pur­chas­es, and smart­phones $74 bil­lion. And by the end of this year, com­bined tablet and mobile sales are expect­ed to total $114 bil­lion, pow­ered by media prod­ucts, cloth­ing and con­sumer elec­tron­ics.

2014 Online Sales Expected to Increase 9–12%

Retail indus­try sales for 2014 are pro­ject­ed to increase 4.1%, up from the pre­lim­i­nary 3.7% growth seen in 2013. Accord­ing to a new eco­nom­ic fore­cast from the Nation­al Retail Fed­er­a­tion (NRF), online sales in 2014 are expect­ed to grow between 9 and 12%. The hous­ing sec­tor is expect­ed to con­tin­ue to improve in 2014, and stronger house­hold and busi­ness con­fi­dence should spur more con­sumer spend­ing over­all.

Retailers Anticipate Holiday Online Sales to Grow At Least 10%

Retail­ers are expect­ing a mobile Christ­mas this hol­i­day sea­son. New research has found that retail­ers are cau­tious­ly opti­mistic, with 60% fore­cast­ing growth in excess of 10% for 2013 online hol­i­day sea­son rev­enue, in line with indus­try fore­casts. Not sur­pris­ing­ly, retail­ers expect mobile to play an increased role in dri­ving sales with min­i­mal con­tri­bu­tions from social media.
