The latest Survey of Advertising and Marketing from BIA Advisory Services reveals that 37% of retail small and medium-sized businesses earn half of their revenue from their online efforts.
Sales made through mobile phones and tablets are just beginning to have an impact on e-commerce, however, those transactions are expected to reach $293 billion by 2018, or approximately 54% of all online sales. Tablets are expected to drive $219 billion of those purchases, and smartphones $74 billion. And by the end of this year, combined tablet and mobile sales are expected to total $114 billion, powered by media products, clothing and consumer electronics.
Retail industry sales for 2014 are projected to increase 4.1%, up from the preliminary 3.7% growth seen in 2013. According to a new economic forecast from the National Retail Federation (NRF), online sales in 2014 are expected to grow between 9 and 12%. The housing sector is expected to continue to improve in 2014, and stronger household and business confidence should spur more consumer spending overall.
Retailers are expecting a mobile Christmas this holiday season. New research has found that retailers are cautiously optimistic, with 60% forecasting growth in excess of 10% for 2013 online holiday season revenue, in line with industry forecasts. Not surprisingly, retailers expect mobile to play an increased role in driving sales with minimal contributions from social media.
