Product designers have been hard at work solving the problem of poor reception when consumers use mobile phones at home. Look for a new piece of hardware, a femtocell, to be marketed this year. Femtocells improve mobile phone in-home reception and will make it even easier for consumers to drop landlines for good. So far, Sprint is the only major carrier test marketing femtocells. While industry experts note concerns about the cost of femtocells and a competing technology called Unlicensed Mobile Access many expect major carriers to begin selling femtocells in some capacity in 2009.
Marketing campaigns will be required to educate consumers and generate demand. Is this technology being test marketed in your area?
