"With warmer weather on the way, more than half (56%) of Americans plan to buy at least one piece of outdoor furniture this season, with a majority of millennials (53%) saying they want to buy multiple pieces, compared to 29% of boomers, according to a new survey from the International Casual Furnishings Association."

"Outdoor furnishings that are traditionally considered indoors, such as sofas and sectionals, bars and décor such as rugs and throw pillows, are also top of mind for millennials, reports HFN. 40% of millennials said they wanted to buy outdoor sofas/sectionals, compared to 17% of boomers. While 37% of millennials plan to buy bars, only 17% of boomers did. Outdoor décor will be on 25% of millennials’ shopping lists, compared to 17% of boomers’."

"Fewer consumers are purchasing their indoor furniture in sets, and that trend is translating to the outdoor category as well, as people want an eclectic mix, said Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of the ICFA. 'Manufacturers are stepping up their game with combinations that might include teak, wicker and vinyl, all in the same space for a more layered vibe.'”

"The survey also found millennials were also more likely to upgrade their outdoor spaces so they could entertain (43% versus 28% of boomers), as well as add value to their homes (32% versus 20% of boomers)."

"Overall, respondents said they want outdoor lighting (52%), lounge chairs or chaises (51%), a fire pit (49%) and a dining table with chairs (42%) for these refurbished outdoor living spaces."

"Over half (53%) said they want to create an enjoyable and functional outdoor space. Three quarters (74%) use their patios for relaxation, while 58% use them for socializing and 51% use them for cooking."
