People choose to adopt plant-based diets for various reasons, some ethical, others health-related. According to a 2016 Harris Poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, approximately eight million U.S. adults are vegan or vegetarian. And this group is leading the trend in juice bars and smoothie shops opening across the nation.

But finding meatless options at restaurants and supermarkets can be a challenge, depending on where you find yourself hungry in America. And though some experts contend that forgoing animal protein could save the average person at least $750 per year, many find the lifestyle still tough on their wallets.

Juice bars and smoothie shops have enormous opportunity to entice vegetarians and plant-lovers alike. The new AudienceSCAN survey found 22% of Americans drink smoothies and/or juice at least once per week.

Fortunately, many U.S. cities offer plentiful and inexpensive options for budget-conscious herbivores. To determine the best and cheapest places for a plant-based diet, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 100 largest U.S. cities across 15 key indicators of vegan- and vegetarian-friendliness. WalletHub examined each city based on such metrics as the cost of groceries for vegetarians, the share of restaurants serving meatless options and salad shops per capita.

Local shops can take cues from these veggie-friendly cities and promote their own veggie-friendliness! The AudienceSCAN research revealed 24% of Smoothie Drinkers took action after watching pre-roll video ads (the video that plays before the video you want to watch) in the past month.
