How much will advertisers spend to reach the podcast listener in the U.S. this year? The number will likely top $3B, reports digitalapplied.com. AudienceSCAN data shows a significant number of podcast listeners take action after encountering a podcast ad. The market is quickly changing though.

How are podcasts changing?

Podcasts come in all shapes and sizes. Some content lasts 15 minutes while other programs can run for over an hour. More podcasters are combining video with audio to reach a bigger audience. And some podcasts only run for a set number of episodes, leaving fans to search for new content.

How are consumers discovering podcasts?

The typical podcast listener uses apps to find new content. YouTube accounts for 40% of program discovery. SoundsProfitable reports that 62% of consumers search for a title while 30% search for a favorite host/celebrity name. These consumers already have an idea of what they’re looking for.

Consumers have a growing appetite for podcasts. Around 50% of adults look for a new podcast every month. And they appear to be hooked on this form of entertainment because 75% look for something new as soon as a favorite ends.

To get noticed, analysts point out that 60% of social-discovered podcasts happen with an organic post, while 33% happen because of a sponsored post or ad. These data points serve as clues for what podcasters should be doing to get noticed. Clearly, content marketing is a must.

Should your accounts advertise on a podcast?

As podcasts attract an audience, your accounts must ask if it’s worth advertising on them. Magellan AI reports that 2.29% of podcast listeners “Visit an advertiser’s site” as the result of seeing an ad. That response rate is linked to ads on the Top 500 podcasts. For the Top 3,000 podcasts, the response rate is 1.63%. They measured the activity across 30 days following campaigns in Q1 2026.

What is the consumer response rate to podcast advertising?

There are many other ways that consumers can respond to ads they hear on podcasts. According to AudienceSCAN, around 25.1% of all U.S. adults have taken action as the result of hearing an ad on a podcast. Of those, 59% started an online search.

Magellan AI data shows that some podcast genres generated particularly high response rates in Q1 2026. These genres include health and fitness, comedy and sports.

There are ways to ensure an even higher response rate. To secure the highest response rates, encourage your accounts to pay for host-read ads. These ads generate a 2.45% response rate.

What is the average conversion rate?

The Magellan report focuses on website activity following podcast ad exposure. For example, your accounts will want to know what they can expect regarding conversions. The conversion calculation includes actions such as filling out forms or registering for an event. Globally, the conversion rate for this activity is 9.74%.

What is the purchase conversion rate?

And the purchase conversion rate is even more important. Magellan reports that number, globally, is 5.22%. But noticeable differences appear for specific marketing vertical. Food, hobbies/lifestyle and consumer services/software marketers experience top purchase conversion rates. And those conversions tend to happen on podcast genres such as health and fitness, society and culture, and arts.

When advertising on podcasts that include video, your accounts can also experience a significant boost. The purchase conversion rate jumps from 4.29% to 5.65%.

Magellan also tracks conversion rate differences between new listeners and repeat listeners. New listeners are most likely to convert when they tune into the following types of podcast genres:

  • Business
  • Education
  • Health and fitness

For repeat listeners, conversions are highest for these genres:

  • History
  • TV and file
  • News

Is there a profile for the typical podcast listener?

It’s easy to assume that podcasts and millennials go hand-in-hand. But there are many types of podcast listeners. Don’t let your accounts miss connecting with key audiences.

It’s true, reports AudienceSCAN, that around 41% of Comedy Listeners (radio and podcasts) are millennials. But 18% of the audience falls into Gen Xers territory.

As numbereight data shows, “different age groups engage through different categories, moments, and cultural cues.”

Their data also shows that advertisers who want to reach women should advertise on true crime shows. AudienceSCAN data confirms that women over-index for that genre.

And if your clients hope to sell their products and services to older consumers, age 65 and up, encourage them to buy ad space on newscasts. The newscast audience also skews heavily male. AudienceSCAN reports that these consumers are far more likely than average to buy high-end or luxury products. They are also significantly more likely to be liquor store patrons.

Podcast advertising can reach the typical podcast listener and beyond. Encourage your accounts to carefully research their target audience and share AudienceSCAN data with them to improve results.
